4-H State Contests

Kelsie competed in 3 contests this year. (they can only do a maximum of 3). They were: Dairy Foods, Shooting sports and GPS.
    Shooting Sports
She was the only girl from our county to compete in shooting sports this year. Shooting Sports includes: rifle, shotgun, bow and arrow and survival skills test. I tried to get Ashley to compete this year but she wouldn't do it. She has so much natural talent that if she would practice she could win. She isn't interested in 4-H anymore. Kels did well but she didn't place this year in shooting. She didn't practice as much as she should have. There is more competition now that she is older. She will do better next year.

Dairy Foods Contest
Kelsie made a patriotic chesecake. The one in the picture wasn't her finished product. I forgot to take a pic of it. How, I don't know. IT was in a rectangle pan so it looked more like a flag. The one shown in the picture it the one she made during her demonstration. Her demonstration went real well. There were a few things that she can improve on for next year. She needs to have it memorized better so she doesn't need to look at her notes. The only other thing that she was maked down for was she had a cheesecake demo and her speach was on dairy products and fitness.

One of the judges said her choice of recipes and her theme didn't go together. She did, however tall them that she tried making the recipe with the fat free cream cheese but it didn't set-up.
Her board turned out really cute. My scrapboook supplies came in handy for this!

She did win a first place ribbon but she didn't win one of the cash awards this year.

GPS

She was the ONLY girl to compete in the GPS contest and she WON!!
She won a $100.00 savings bond. I was so excited. All of the classes she has taught on this subject have really paid off.

4-H Junior Youth Conference

I have been involved in MANY activities in my 4 years of volunteering in 4-H but none compared to JYC. My daughter was one of the youth leaders from our state. The youth leader's ages ranged from 15-18. They planned and lead all of the workshops and activities for the younger kids. The younger kids were 11 and 12 years old.

Kelsie (my daughter) was so excited to be a youth leader. She went to JYC when she was 11 and 12 and had so much fun. She instantly bonded with her youth leaders and she still emails them in college. She was looking forward to being a mentor to this group of kids.

When the youth first arrived they were shy, for some this was probably their first trip away from their families. When they left, none of them wanted to go home. They had so much fun. IT was amazing for me to watch these teenagers lead the younger kids. The adult leaders were there in case we were needed but we let the teens lead, guide and have fun with these kids. I was so proud of all of them. THey are a GREAT group of kids, giving their time to lead the younger children. They were not paid. In fact, the treats and favors for the kids were made and paid for by them, because they wanted the kids to have fun and feel apart of the group.

This group of teens gave these kids memories that will stay with them a lifetime and I was so proud to have been a part of it. I love being a leader and being able to see my daughter shine and excel using the talents that she has.

Wasn't I cute!

Wasn't I Cute? Too bad I couldn't have stayed that way. The affects of time *sigh*

Ramblings of a mad woman

Just seeing how this thing works! It seems everyone is blogging now. It isn't enough to learn html and have a website, now everyone has an online journal. I guess it is similar to a website, just easier to maintain and available to the masses that don't want to get into the techy and ever changing world of html and webpages. I can't even keep my website updated so do I actually think I will write here on a continual basis? Who knows. Pen and paper journals with our own handwriting are sure to be a thing of the past. Now we can look forward to reading anyone's personal info on the web in fonts and typos.

Kelsie Goes to Washington

There aren't words enough to express how proud I am of this child. Kelsie was the only person nominated from our state to apply to be on the National 4-H Technology Team. She made a webpage that detailed all of her technology abilities and training. She made it!!

She went to a team training in Nebraska in February. This month she is off to Washington, D.C. as a member of the National Tech Team. They went to do TECHY stuff! Among other things, she ran the spotlights at the assemblies and she co-taught a class on GPS.

Besides what the state and the tech team paid, she had to raise $600.00 to go on this trip. We spent 3 afternoons after school getting donors to help sponsor her. A local computer store gave her $300.00. He said "it was good to see a woman in technology."

There were 3 other kids from our county that went. They had to apply and interview as well. IT was good that there were other kids from our county there. She got to know the other kids from our state real well . While they were there they were able to meet with the Congressmen from our state at the Capitol Building. They all took time to meet with the kids and answer their questions.

THe Utah delegation was able to stay a few extra days to do some sight seeing. THe 4-H center let them stay there inexpensively for a few days. They went to Lincoln Memorial, THe WW II and the Vietnam Memorials, Arlington national Cemetery, The Air and Space Museum. They seen the White House.
